Women's basketball team earns second straight blowout win to open 24-25
MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway continued its blistering start to the season, earning a second dominant win in as many days with a 100-69 rout of Cincinnati Clermont (Ohio) in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday.
The Eagles, who routed Kentucky Christian 86-59 in their season opener Friday, followed a similar formula, using a relentless full-court press to turn turnovers into points. Midway forced 22 turnovers Saturday and have taken the ball away 56 times through two games.
Jermyra Christian got things going early, scoring the game's first five points off of back-to-back steals in a 15-second stretch. Christian finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds and four steals, all team highs.
Following her sparkling 10-point, seven-steal debut, freshman A'Lyrica Hughes was excellent again Saturday, putting up 15 points with a team-best six assists.
As it did on Friday, the excellent freshman play extended beyond Hughes, with Kiera Couch contributing 14 points in 18 minutes off the bench.
Seniors Kassidy Daugherty and Atlantis White added nine points each for Midway, which takes a big step up in competition Wednesday when it travels to Louisville for an exhibition against NCAA Division-I Bellarmine at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday marked the first time the Eagles have scored 100 points in a game since a 108-point effort in a triple over time game against the University of the Cumberlands on March 7, 2023.
The Eagles will return to NAIA play next weekend at the two-day Val Weinstein Classic in Winona Lake, Ind., opening against Grace (Ind.) on Friday.
