Women's Tennis blanks Celtics in conference opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Following a string of non-conference matches to open the season, the Midway women's tennis team opened River States Conference play on Saturday with a trip to Greensburg, Pa. to battle Carlow (Pa.).

The Eagles swept all three doubles matches to claim the first point taking a 1-0 lead into the six singles matches. The visitors then made it a clean sweep by winning all six singles matches en route to claiming the 7-0 shutout victory.

With the win, Adam Malik's squad improves to 2-4 overall, while they win their league opener improving to 1-0. Carlow, meanwhile, drops to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play following the loss.

The No. 1 doubles duo of Carly Poste (Henderson, Nev.) and Paulina Moreno (Edo, Mexico) won 6-2 over Ashleigh Bowser and Caitlin Hoag to put Midway within one point of clinching the doubles point.

Midway easily claimed the doubles points following wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Angelia Herrera (Louisville, Ky.) teamed with Isabella McKinney (Paducah, Ky.) and won 6-1 at No. 2, while Grace Froedge (Louisville, Ky.) and Jasmin McClenahan (Weslaco, Texas) also won 6-1 at No. 3.

The Eagles continued to dominate singles play dropping just 10 games over the 12 sets played as they cruised to the 7-0 victory.

Carly Poste defeated Bowser 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Paulina Moreno followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Karissa Miller. Grace Froedge and Angelia Herrera, meanwhile, won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Isabella McKinney carded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alexa Ward at No. 5 singles, while Jasmine McClenahan helped close out the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Caitlin McCarty at No. 6.

Following the victory, Midway will have the next week off before hosting Indiana University Kokomo in their home opener on Sunday (March 4) at 12:30 p.m. ET.
