Record-setting Gottler leads women's track team to win in outdoor opener

WILMORE, Ky. - It's hard to imagine Trinity Gottler's outdoor track and field career starting any better than it did on Saturday.

Already a multi-time program record holder during indoor season, the freshman thrower set four Midway outdoor records while recording four wins, leading the Eagles to a first-place finish at the four-team Asbury Invitational.

Midway finished with 60 points, well ahead of the 35 recorded by runner-up Asbury.

A third of the scoring was accounted for by Gottler, who was victorious in the shot put (11.95 meters), discus (38.83), hammer throw (37.95) and javelin (34.93).

Fellow field event standout Nevaeh Brown also made it to the winner's podium multiple times, but in a much different capacity than usual.

Just two weeks removed from a runner-up pole vault finish at the NAIA Indoor Championships, Brown found a new way to thrive with the event not on the schedule, taking first in both the 200- and 400-meter runs. She finished the 200 in 26.97 seconds and the 400 in 1 minute, 3.7 seconds.

Other individual winners for Midway were Emilee Cecil in the 100 (13.54) and Emerson VanScoy in the high jump (1.55).

Cecil also earned a win with Trinity Smith, Jasmine Clouse and Abby Baldridge in the 4x400 relay (4:42.65).

Smith had two second-place finishes as well, running a 5:03.83 in the 1500 and a 2:35.40 in the 800.

Saturday marked the first time in program history the Eagle men and women were victorious in the same outdoor event.

The Eagles will try to keep things rolling next Saturday, when they compete in the Pioneer Invitational at Transylvania University in Lexington.
