Women's cross country team sets new program 5K record
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Just moments after the Midway men's cross country team ran the fastest race time in program history, the women's team followed suit.
The Eagles finished the 5K NAIA Appalachian Challenge in 1 hour, 41 minutes, 17 seconds Friday, easily breaking the previous program record of 1:44.01 set at the Jenna Strong Invitational on Oct. 11, 2019. Eagle runners, on averaged, finished Friday's race in 20 minutes, 15 seconds.
Every runner ran a personal-best time for Midway, which placed 13th with a score of 348 in a stacked field that saw Milligan (Tenn.), the No. 1 team in the country, win with 44.
Hoping to make another splash at the River States Conference Championships in two weeks, Trinity Smith led the Eagles with a 37th-place run of 19:04. Smith finished third at the RSC Championships last season, clinching a spot in the NAIA Championships in the process.
Ariah Egleston was second on the team, finishing 61st in 19:38. Reigning River States Conference Runner of the Week Abby Cunningham was 74th in 19:52, cutting more than 45 seconds from her winning time at the Spoon Fiercely Faithful Meet on Oct. 12.
Stevie McSorley (101st, 20:39) and Abby Baldridge (137th, 22:01) scored for Midway as well, while Jasmine Clouse (145th, 22:32) also had a PR.
Next up for the Eagles will be the River States Conference Championships in Evansville on Nov. 9.
