Eagles extend win streak to three with easy road win at Oakland City
OAKLAND CITY, Ky. -- Following a pair of home victories last week, the Midway men's basketball team hit the road on Tuesday (Jan. 31) when they traveled to Oakland City (Ind.) for a River States Conference matchup inside the Johnson Center.
In a game that saw 13 different players etch their name in the scoring column, the Eagles would take a 22-point lead into the locker room before putting it in cruise control in the second half en route to the 84-59 blowout victory.
With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad extends their winning streak to three as they improve to 14-8 overall and 9-4 in RSC play. Oakland City, meanwhile, falls to 8-15 overall and 2-11 in league play following the loss.
After getting off to a strong start in their last outing against Alice Lloyd (Ky.), the Eagles got off to yet another terrific start on Tuesday. They shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the opening half and held the Mighty Oaks to 28.1 percent.
Tobias Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) opened the contest with back-to-back buckets before Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) followed with a pair of his own as Midway jumped to an 8-2 advantage.
Oakland City got back within one, but a jump shot by Thompson helped kickstart a 13-2 run as Midway doubled the home team up with a 24-12 edge. The Mighty Oaks battled back and cut the deficit to single digits, but the Eagles continued to pad their lead.
They held the Mighty Oaks without a field goal for eight plus minutes which allowed the visitors to go on an 18-2 run. A tip-in by Ridge Hall (New Pekin, Ind.), a triple by Miller, and a jumper by TJ O'Connor (Miami, Fla.) fueled a 9-0 run to start the rally.
After Oakland City hit a pair of freebies, the Eagles went on another 9-0 run. Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.), Hall, and Miller each hit buckets, while O'Connor sank a trey from way downtown as Midway would take a 43-21 lead into the locker room.
The second half saw the Eagles consistently hold a 20 point lead as they would lead by as many as 27 en route to the 84-59 victory to clinch the season sweep over the Mighty Oaks.
Three players reached double figures in the win led by Donnie Miller who poured in a game-high 24 points. Tobias Thompson hit a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and finished with 12 points, while Nick Keeton recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Blue and Gold finished the contest shooting 47 percent from the floor, while the Mighty Oaks shot just 31.8 percent. The Eagles also forced 18 Oakland City turnovers which led to a 26-6 edge in points off turnovers.
Midway is set to return to the friendly confines of Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 4) when they host Brescia (Ky.) at 3 p.m. ET.
