Men's tennis falls at Shawnee, will be third seed at RSC Tournament

PORTSMITH, Ohio - With the No. 2 seed and a first round bye at stake, Shawnee State defeated Midway 4-2 in each team's final River States Conference men's tennis match of the regular season.

With both teams entering the day 3-1 in RSC play, the Bears got off to a good start, securing the doubles point with wins at both the No. 2 and 3 spots. 

One of the best singles match of the day provided the clinching point, as Ivan Wularu fought back after losing the opening set 7-5, topping Izan Casado 6-2, 6-3 in the final two to secure the win for Shawnee State.

It was one of two three-set wins by the Bears, with Ishamael Dowuona also topping German Collado 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 3.

Axel Sperling had the best showing for the Eagles Tuesday. He defeated Zinedine Arva Purbo 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles while also teaming with Casado for a 6-1 victory against Zayden Rinehart and Keenen Lambert at No. 1 doubles.

Midway's other win was earned by Aditya Roy Chowdhury at No. 3 singles. Chowdhury topped Ishamael Dowuona 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

The Eagles close the regular season 8-9 overall and 3-2 in conference. The River States Tournament will be held in Evansville, Ind. April 26-27.
