Men's tennis avenges loss to SSU, to face Oakland City in RSC Championships final

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Though it'll come with little rest, the Midway men's tennis team was able to make it back to the final round of the River States Conference Championships.

The No. 3 seeded Eagles opened the day with a 4-1 win over No. 6 Indiana East, then avenged a regular-season loss to No. 2 Shawnee State with a 4-2 win in the semifinals Thursday.

SEMIFINALS

After losing out on the second-seed and a first-round bye with a loss to Shawnee in the regular season finale, Midway got itself a big momentum boost by winning the doubles point, thanks to 6-3 wins by Axel Sperling and Izan Casado at No. 1 and Daniel Pinzon and Aditya Roy Chowdhury at No. 2.

Casado was also able to secure the winning point thanks to a three-set win over Zayden Rinehart at No. 6 singles. After losing the opening set 6-4, Casado rallied to win the next two 6-3, 6-2.

That sealed it after Daniele Trentin and German Collado won by virtually identical scores at No. 3 and 4. Trentin beat Zinedine Purbo 6-2, 6-1 while Collado defeated Keenen Lambert 6-1, 6-2.

QUARTERFINALS

The Eagles rebounded after losing the doubles point, losing just seven combined games in their four singles wins.

Sperling defeated Sebastian Torrealba 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Collado topped Kyle Hollingswroth 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.

The two other singles wins were both won by 6-0, 6-2 finals. Casado beat Bryson Hale at No. 4, with Jordan Patterson taking down Bryce Wennen at No. 5.

Midway needs just one more win to secure the first conference title in program history, though the Eagles will have to go through Oakland City, the 25th-ranked team in the country, to get it.

The top seed and two-time defending league champion Mighty Oaks advanced with a 4-0 semifinal win over Brescia. Oakland City beat Midway 4-0 in the title match in 2023.
