[FALL PREVIEW] Tennis teams bring back wealth of experience

MIDWAY, Ky. - After back-to-back second-place finishes in the River States Conference, Midway's men's and women's tennis teams return a wealth of experience as they look to get over the hump this season.

To prepare for a challenging conference slate this spring, the Eagles will play a string of matches in fall, beginning with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships, which will be hosted by Georgetown College this weekend.

Here's a look at what the Eagles will bring to the court in the 2024-25 campaign.

MEN

Midway retains the services of five of its top-six singles players from a year ago with the returns of Daniel Pinzon, Axel Sperling, German Collado, Aditya Roy and Izan Casado.

Sperling (first team) and Collado (third) both earned All-River States Conference selections last year, while Roy had the team's best winning percentage last season, going a combined 9-3 while playing across singles positions Nos. 2-6.

The Eagles also brought back a good potion of their depth with the return of Aleksey Granitsa, Tyler Fox and Manuel Mirabel. All three players posted records of .500 or better last season.

The veterans will mix with a six-man group of newcomers. One of them, freshman Ferran Clapes, is penciled in to play at the ITA Regionals.

Midway's top doubles team will return in tact as well, with Sperling and Casado slated to play in the No. 1 spot at ITAs. They'll be joined by Collado and Clapes at No. 2 and Roy and Fox at No. 3.

WOMEN

After dropping a very competitive RSC Championship match to Oakland City to close last season, the Eagle women also return five of their top six players, highlighted by the program's first All-American.

Junior Agustina Olivero will be back in the No. 1 singles spot, where she recorded a 12-2 record on her way to an NAIA Second Team All-American selection last season. She'll also have her No. 1 doubles partner back, as she and Mara Guillen look to improve further after going 13-4 together last season.

Guillen, a First-Team All-RSC player herself, will be back at the No. 2 singles spot. Spots No. 3, 4 and 6 be occupied by returners as well, in Nana Hishida, Sofia Rueda and Angelia Herrera.

Hishida and Herrera are expected to play at the No. 3 doubles spot. At No. 2, Rueda will pair with freshman Tanit Cevada. Cevada will also be part of the singles rotation, scheduled to play at No. 5 this weekend.

The ITA NAIA Men's and Women's Southeast Regional Championships are scheduled to be played Thursday-Sunday.

Due to weather concerns, the first two days have been moved from Georgetown College to the indoor Lexington Tennis Club. Play will begin at 8 a.m.
