Women's basketball drops conference opener at Oakland City
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Turnovers and inconsistent shooting negated a fast start, as the Midway women's basketball team fell 85-70 at Oakland City in each team's River States Conference opener Tuesday night.
Midway scored the game's first seven points and even took a 2-0 lead before the ball even tipped due to a stat book error that resulted in an Oakland City technical foul and two Jaiden Douthit free throws.
The Mighty Oaks quickly rallied, though the Eagles were able to maintain a 21-20 advantage at quarter's end. But the offense struggled to get anything going in the second period, shooting just 3-of-13 from the floor as Oakland City took a 38-33 lead into the half.
Things then took a swift turn early in the third quarter. After Sereniti Webb hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 41-38, the Oaks proceeded to go on an 8-0 run in the span of just 1 minute, 13 seconds to push the lead to double digits.
Though shooting ran hot and cold, the primary culprit of the Eagles' offensive inconsistency was ball control. Midway turned the ball over 22 times Tuesday, which led to 28 Mighty Oak points.
Kassidy Daugherty and Atlantis White led the way offensively, scoring 15 and 14 points respectively. Daugherty and White both hit four 3-pointers.
Douthit added 12 points, with Jacie Chesser scoring nine and grabbing a team-high seven rebounds for Midway, which fell to 2-6 overall.
The Eagles look to break into the River States win column when they return to action Saturday, hosting in-state foe Brescia at 1 p.m.
