Chesser double-double, offensive balance leads women's basketball to RSC win at Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. - Midway put together a 13-1 run between the first and second quarters and maintained control the rest of the way, improving to 2-1 in Rivers States Conference play with an 89-79 win at Indiana Kokomo in women's basketball Tuesday night.

After falling behind 7-2 early, the Eagles rallied to take their first lead 10-7 on a second-chance 3-point play by Jacie Chesser. Though the Cougars answered with a rally of their own, Midway went ahead for good on a Jermyra Christian layup with 17 seconds to play in the first quarter, then took a 19-15 lead into the second after Trinity Johnson scored a layup just before the period buzzer.

That early sequence set the tone for Chesser's best night in an Eagle uniform. She finished with a double-double, her 18 points and 12 rebounds the best she's put up in a Midway uniform.

Chesser had four blocks as well Tuesday, just one less than she had in the first 10 games of the season combined.

She also led a great early performance on the offensive glass, as the Eagles scored 15 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds in the first half.

Any hope IUK had of making a comeback seemed to vanish when Alyssa Hitch knocked down three 3-pointers in the final 1:38 of the third quarter, a run that helped Midway extend its lead as large as 21 in the fourth quarter before a late Cougar rally.

Chesser had plenty of help on the offensive end. Jaiden Douthit (15 points), Hitch (13), Kassidy Daugherty (13) and Sereniti Webb (11) also scored in double figures for an Eagle team that had its highest scoring output of the season.

After dropping their league opener to Oakland City on Nov. 28, the Eagles have won back-to-back River States games while improving to 4-7 overall. Tuesday also marked their seventh-straight victory over the Cougars.

Midway has one conference game remaining before the end of 2023, as it will host St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) at 3 p.m. Friday.
