Eagles unable to slow NAIA's leading scorer in loss to Eutectics
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Coming off a comfortable win over Brescia (Ky.) a week ago, the Midway women's basketball team looked to record their second consecutive victory on Saturday when they battled Health Sciences and Pharmacy (Mo.).
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, they were unable to make it two straight wins following an 80-67 defeat to the Eutectics.
Jaiden Douthit got the Eagles on the board with a triple 17 seconds into the game before hitting her second three of the opening frame four minutes later giving her squad an 8-4 lead.
The Eutectics, who improved to 4-3 following the win, immediately answered with a 16-3 run to close the quarter after holding the Eagles without a field goal for over five minutes.
The Eagles (3-7) were plagued by another scoring drought in the second stanza. Neither team scored for nearly three minutes before a layup by Douthit cut the UHSP lead to 29-18 with just under three minutes remaining in the half.
The final three plus minutes of the first half saw the NAIA's leading scorer take over the game for the home team. Grace Beyer, who entered the game averaging 34.3 points per game, scoring the final seven points to give her team a 36-23 lead heading into the locker room.
Beyer would score 16 points in the first half before tacking on 20 more in the second half on her way to a game-high 36 points. She also grabbed 14 rebounds and hit 10-of-24 from the floor and 13-of-14 from the free throw line.
The Eutectics would shoot 60.8 percent from the floor in the second half on their way to a comfortable 80-76 victory.
Midway had three players reach double figures in the loss led by the duo of Kassidy Daugherty and Jaiden Douthit who scored 14 points each. Sereniti Webb, meanwhile, added 10 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Eagles are set to return to River States Conference play on Tuesday (Dec. 12) when they travel to IU Kokomo (Ind.). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
