Women's basketball snaps three-game skid with inside-out dominance at WVU Tech
BECKLEY, W.V. - After lighting it up from outside in the first half, the Midway women's basketball asserted its dominance in the paint in the second to snap a three-game losing streak with a 84-71 River States Conference win at West Virginia Tech Tuesday night.
The Eagles were virtually unstoppable from the outside early on and when Trinity Johnson hit a pull-up just before the buzzer, it capped a 9-of-16 3-point performance in the first half and a 29-point second quarter, lifting Midway to a 47-38 lead.
Jaiden Douthit and Alyssa Hitch both hit three triples in the first half. Douthit added two more in the second on her way to a season-high 19-point scoring effort.
Douthit's 3s were the only ones the Eagles hit in the second half, but the inside dominance of Sereniti Webb and Jermyra Christian was more than enough to keep the game in their control.
Webb continued her recent hot streak, leading all players with 20 points and eight rebounds. She has scored in double figures in each of the last 12 games, and is averaging 20.3 points and 10 rebounds in the last nine.
Christian added 16 points off the bench, with her last eight coming in just six minutes in a fourth-quarter where she was able to cut to the basket with ease, helping Midway pull ahead by as much as 17.
A much-needed win lifts the 8-12 Eagles to 4-6 in River States play. A three-game stretch of winnable road games continues on Saturday with a 1 p.m. in-state matchup with Alice Lloyd.
