TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Behind a 19-0 third-quarter run, St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) was able to pull away from Midway, eventually winning 86-74 in a River States Conference West Division women's basketball matchup Saturday.
Down eight at the half, the Eagles looked to be pushing towards an upset out of the locker room, as Atlantis White and Lauren Walton hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Pomeroy lead to 42-40.
Sadly, those would be the last points Midway would score over a 4-minute, 58-second stretch, a period in which St. Mary of the Woods (17-9, 12-4 in conference) went 5-of-6 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the foul line. Though both teams attempted at least 30 free throws, the Pomeroys were particularly lethal at the line, making 28-of-32.
Despite the loss, Sereniti Webb had another terrific game in the paint, finishing with 25 points and 15 rebounds, her ninth double-double of the season. The Eagles held a 16-5 advantage in offensive rebounds with Webb accounting for half of them.
The sophomore center has been particularly great against St. Mary of the Woods this season, where in two games, she's averaged 28.5 points and 14 rebounds.
White chipped in 14 points, one shy of her career high, for the Eagles, who fall to 11-15 overall and 7-9 in the RSC.
Still looking to lock down a home game in the opening round of the conference tournament, Midway has two regular season games remaining, starting with a 5:30 p.m. road game against Indiana Southeast Thursday.
