Freshman Hughes named RSC defensive player of the week

MIDWAY, Ky. - A'Lyrica Hughes' spectacular start to her college career got even better Monday, as the Midway freshman was named River States Conference Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week.

Hughes' defensive efforts were particularly strong in an 86-59 win over Kentucky Christian Friday, in which she recorded seven steals. She followed that up with a 15-point, four-rebound, six-assist performance against Cincinnati Clermont Saturday, a game the Eagles won 100-69.

The freshman from Owensboro is tied for the team lead in scoring at 12.5 points per-game, while leading in assists (4.5) and steals (4.0). She's helped lead a pressure-heavy defense that has forced 56 turnovers in the first two games.

The Eagles will be in Louisville for an exhibition against NCAA Division-I Bellarmine at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to Winona Lake, Ind. for the Val Weinstein Classic on Friday and Saturday.
