Women's golf, Phillips conclude weekend with multiple Midway records
LIMA, Ohio - Despite not coming out on top of the leaderboard, the Midway women's golf team was able to open the 2024-25 season with arguably the best statistical weekend in program history.
The Eagles shattered the program's previous best three-round score, while Maryssa Phillips set a new three-round individual record score, as Midway took second with a 62-over par tally of 926 at the University of Northwestern Ohio Fall Invitational.
A very good Pikeville (Ky.) team came in first with a +27 score of 291, placing five golfers in the top-eight. Midway was 86 strokes ahead of third-place Madonna (Mich.).
After recording the best individual (304) and two-round (611) scores in program history Saturday, the Eagles completed the trifecta Sunday, shooting a 315 to easily trump the previous best three-round mark of 960, set at the 2021 River States Conference Championships.
Phillips followed the same trajectory in her fourth-place finish.
On Saturday, she she opened with a 72 to tie the program's best individual round before setting a new two-round record at 147. With a 76 on Sunday, the sophomore from Lexington finished with a seven-over par 223, breaking the previous three-round record of 231, set by Kathryn Lawler at the 2017 River States Fall Preview.
Were it not for Phillips' outstanding weekend, freshman Kasey Cameron would have found herself atop the the three-round record book. Cameron finished strong in her first collegiate tournament Sunday, shooting a team-best 75 to finish with a 228 (+11).
Savannah Salchli came in 10th with a 239 (+23), with Sophie Lester (242, +26) and Bree Smith (243, +27) taking 11th and 12 respectively.
Midway will look to build off the great opening weekend when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Rohrman Invitational at Purdue University on Sept. 9-10.
