Women's Tennis Kicks Off Season With Pair of Tournaments

MIDWAY, Ky. – This previous weekend, the Midway University women's tennis team competed in a pair of tournaments to open their 2022-23 season. Four members of the Eagles took part in the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament which was followed by two members competing in the River States Conference Individual Tournament.

At the ITA Regionals, Agustina Olivero (Montevideo, Uruguay) opened her tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Clara Asprella (Campbellsville). In her second-round match, Olivero fell to Teadora Jovic (Union) 6-2, 7-5 to close out her tournament. In other main-draw singles action, Mara Guillen (Madrid, Spain) lost to Reshma Challarapu (Lindsey Wilson) 6-2, 6-4. 

In the alternate draw, Isabella McKinney (Paducah, Ky.) picked up a three-set win while Ana Larreal (Maracay, Venezuela) lost to Emely Castro (UT Southern) 6-3, 6-4. In doubles play, the duo of Olivero and Guillen picked up a win in their first-round match before exiting the tournament with a 6-3 loss to Castro and Margaret Lucas (UT Southern).

At the RSC Individual tournament, Grace Froedge (Louisville, Ky.) opened her No. 5 singles tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kelsey Rhodes (IU Kokomo) before falling to Juliana Puente (Oakland City) 6-0, 6-2. In the third-place match, Froedge bounced back with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Chloe Schmidt (IU Kokomo).

In the No. 6 singles bracket, Caitlin Wright (Flora, Ind.) opened with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Andrea Saylor (IU Kokomo) before bouncing back with a hard-fought 1-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6 triumph over Bre Koester (IU Kokomo). Wright then closed out her tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Brielle Gaddis (Brescia).

In doubles play, the duo of Wright and Froedge fell to Sarah Dunaway and Kacie Ray (Brescia) 6-2 before falling to Reese Johnson and Maria Olivera (IU Kokomo) by a score of 6-4.
