Women's tennis grabs sole possession of second in RSC standings

GREENTOWN, Ind. - Midway bounced back from its first conference loss of the season with a decisive 5-2 win over Indiana Kokomo in a River States Conference women's tennis match on Friday.

The win is likely to prove very beneficial for seeding purposes at the upcoming River States Conference Tournament, as both teams entered Friday tied for second in the RSC standings. Midway is now 3-1 with IUK dropping to 2-2.

After Agustina Olivero and Mara Guillen coasted to a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot, the Eagles were able to clinch the doubles point thanks to Jasmin McClenahan and Angelia Herrera, who edged out a 6-4 win over Ava Allen and Larissa O'Rourke at No. 3.

Olivero and Guillen had a relatively easy go in singles play, where Olivero beat Maria Oliveira 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Guillen defeated Ava Allen 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

Nos. 4 and 5 also produced straight-set wins for Midway, with Paula Rueda topping Chloe Schmidt 6-2, 6-0 and Grace Froedge winning 6-4, 6-4 against Lillianne Fishero.

The Eagles can clinch the No. 2 seed at the conference tournament outright with a win at Shawnee State (Ohio) next Tuesday. Prior to that, they have two non-conference matches, starting with a trip to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
