Re-shuffled lineup leads women's tennis to win at MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - A day removed from a critical River States Conference win, the Midway women's tennis team avoided a letdown with a 7-0, non-conference win over Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) Saturday.

Normally slated into the top two singles spots, Agustina Olivero and Mara Guillen both sat out following their 6-4 No. 1 doubles win over Audrey Cochran and Emily Allison. Luckily, their replacements stepped up in their absences.

Nana Hishida easily slid into the No. 1 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cocharan. Then, following an injury to Paula Rueda, Grace Froedge moved up to No. 2 for a thrilling 7-6, 7-6 victory against Allison.

Angelia Herrera (6-4, 6-1 over Kiersten Winey), Isabella McKinney (6-1, 6-0 against Megan Volrath) and Raigan Allbert (6-4, 6-2 over Deaj Bresson) also won in straight sets at Nos. 3-5, with Haley Thompson winning by default at No. 6.

Herrera and Thompson were both part of decisive doubles wins as well. Herrera and Jamin McClenahan won 6-0 at No. 2, with Thompson and Caitlin Wright winning 6-1 at No. 3.

Midway improves to 7-8 overall entering the final week of the regular season. The Eagles host a non-conference match against Georgetown on Tuesday, then travel to Shawnee State (Ohio) for their RSC finale Tuesday.

With a win at Shawnee, the Eagles would finish conference play 4-1.
