Thrilling women's tennis senior day match cut short by darkness

MIDWAY, Ky. - Monday's women's tennis match between Georgetown and Midway lasted longer than available daylight, as play was suspended with the Eagles holding a 3-2 lead.

The women's match, which was played after a similarly lengthy men's match, was called when it became too dark to continue playing with the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches still in play.

After dropping the first set 6-2, Midway's Grace Froedge held a 5-2 lead over Lydia Prince in set two. At No. 6, Jasmin McClenahan was up 2-1 in set two after losing to Abby Moss 6-4 in the first.

Before play began, Froedge, McClenahan and Isabella McKinney were all honored in a senior day celebration in what was supposed to be their final home match. A date and time for a potential makeup has not yet been announced.

Though the ending was a bit anticlimactic, there was plenty of excitement in the matches that were played to completion.

The Eagles were able to take the doubles point thanks to Nana Hishida and McClenahan's thrilling 6-4 win over Madelyn Gill and Prince at the No. 2 spot. Hishida turned things in Midway's favor for good behind an acrobatic, lunging volley that set up match point.

Additional thrills came via Agustina Olivero at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set to Bailee Martin 6-4, Olivero was on the brink of a straight-set loss, trailing 6-5 with Martin serving.

But after breaking that serve, Olivero rallied for a 7-6 win to force a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker. Things looked grim again when Martin jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Olivero had another surge in her, scoring nine of the final 10 points for the win.

Things were far less dramatic for Mara Guillen, who teamed with Olivero to beat Samantha Spady and Martin 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, then topped Spady 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Midway, which has already locked up the No. 2 seed and a first round bye at the River States Tournament, closes out the conference portion of its schedule Tuesday with a 1 p.m. match against Shawnee State (Ohio).
