Eagles reach RSC women's tennis finals for the second straight year

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Midway's women's tennis team earned a second-consecutive trip to the River States Conference Championships final, taking down Indiana East 4-1 in a semifinal match Thursday.

After a loss at the No. 1 position, the Eagles' Nos. 2 and 3 teams were able to steal the doubles points. Nana Hishida and Isabella McKinney were 6-1 winners at No. 2, while Angelia Herrera and Jasmin McClenahan earned a 6-4 win at No. 4.

Hishida had a great showing in singles as well, defeating Brooke Schafstall 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position.

That was one of three straight-set singles wins for Midway. Agustina Olivero defeated Linda Marino 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, with Grace Froedge clinching the win with a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Laura Billing at No. 5.

The win sets the second-seeded Eagles up for a championship rematch with top-seed Oakland City, which advanced with a 4-0 semifinal win over Indiana Kokomo Thursday.

Oakland City defeated Midway 4-0 in the finals last season. The Mighty Oaks have won 13 straight matches against RSC opponents, including a 7-0 win over the Eagles on April 6.

The 2024 title match is scheduled to begin Friday at 2 p.m.
