Women's tennis battles to the end in title match loss to Oakland City
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Second-seeded Midway put up a good fight, but No. 1 Oakland City withstood the Eagles and captured a River States Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a 4-1 win in the final round Friday.
After Midway got a 6-1 win from Agustina Olivero and Mara Guillen at No. 1, it was almost able to steal the doubles point when Angelia Herrera and Jasmin McClenahan pushed Kataryna Kulynych and Maria Trembach to a tie-breaker at No. 3. Unfortunately, said tie-breaker was won by the Mighty Oaks, 7-2.
Oakland City then put itself in great position after dropping just two combined games at the fifth and sixth singles spots, though the Eagles didn't make things easy for them.
Midway got on the board when Olivero defeated Trembach 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Guillen won her first set 7-5 against Cristian Hurtado Adelsdorfer, while Nana Hishida and Paula Rueda each forced a third set at Nos. 3 and 4.
But opening with a 6-2 loss, Juliana Puente battled back against Rueda, winning the second set 6-3 before clinching the match with a 6-1 win in the third.
Guillen held a 3-2 lead in the second set at No. 2, while Hishida trailed Liz Aristizabal 2-1 in the third when the final point was secured.
Despite the disappointing end, 2024 marked another positive step for the women's program, which has made it to the RSC Championship match in each of the last two seasons. The Eagles, who lost 4-0 to Oakland City in last year's final, finish the season with a 9-9 record.
